Repointing

Repointing Brickwork – What’s The Point? by Complete Damp Proofing

Understanding the difference between repointing and pointing is essential for maintaining the integrity and appearance of your brickwork. While pointing occurs during the initial construction, repointing involves removing and replacing old or defective mortar.

Damp Proofing

Damp proofing is a method used to prevent moisture from affecting the walls and other areas of your home.

Rising Damp

Rising damp is a recognised damp issue that requires expert diagnosis and specific treatment for effective remediation.

Penetrating Damp

Penetrating damp is one of the most common causes of dampness in properties. It results from water infiltrating a building, often due to external defects.

Render Repair

Maintaining the external render of your property is crucial for protecting your home from the elements. Any damage should be addressed promptly to ensure your house remains safeguarded.

What is Repointing?

Repointing is the process of removing existing or damaged mortar from the joints between bricks and replacing it with new mortar. At Complete Damp Proofing, we use dust extraction to safely grind out the old mortar to a depth of up to 25mm, ensuring a solid base for the new pointing.

The mortar mix can vary depending on the area and the specific requirements of the property, with lime mortar often included to accommodate movement and ensure the mortar is not harder than the brick.

Why Repointing Matters

While repointing can improve the aesthetic appeal of your brickwork, it also plays a crucial role in protecting your home.

Proper repointing prevents water from penetrating or sitting in the joints, which can lead to structural damage over time.

Types of Pointing Finishes

There are several types of pointing finishes, each serving both functional and decorative purposes:

Z

Bucket Handle (Half Round):

The most common finish, offering a rounded appearance.
Z

Weatherstruck:

A slightly slanted finish trimmed along the bottom to allow water runoff.
Z

Tuck Pointing:

Less common in Worthing and West Sussex, this finish is primarily cosmetic, more costly, and time-consuming.
At Complete Damp Proofing, we are skilled in all types of repointing finishes and offer competitive pricing.

Repointing Techniques

We primarily use gun injection for applying new mortar, but we also employ traditional Hawk & Trowel methods when needed. This approach, rarely seen in modern times, ensures a high-quality finish.
